We have the same issue on our 2001 Focus. It started to smell inside and we have found the carpet in the boot at the LHS on passenger side is very wet. Also at the bootom going up over the wheel arch. I'm checking the forums now, and see some advise like: *this could be comming in from the welds arround the tailgate hinges*. On one person's site there is a pic supposedly sent by Ford showing the hinge welds. I'm going to try and check this out on our car and I'll post here if I have success. |

Have also found my 2001 3 door 1.8L Focus is getting water in the boot/hatch. I noticed this on the RH side as the foam bit stuck to the boot carpet piece was all wet. Also some water had entered the spare wheel well. I removed the RH interior piece of carpet that covers the RH wheel arch. There is a square piece cut out where you can see a vent with a thin fabric cover over it. The water is getting through only when it rains and the car is parked. The little space/well though the square cut out is where the water collects and eventually runs over the small lip and into the spare wheel well. I have had the RH light cluster off/cleaned and applyed silican around the 2 peg holes and where the screw goes in but it still leaks! It is a slow process as ive had the hosepipe on it and it takes ages for water to come through. Does the black rubber strip on the roof edges (2 of)that runs from front to back pull out? Anybody any ideas? Butty York |

Check the vent with the thin cover as this is where my leak came from. You might need remove the cover, then replace it, using a silicone sealing around the edges to make a watertight seal. |

I would start by trying to trace where the water is coming in from inside the vehicle. If possible remove the internal trims and redo the test to see where the entry point is. The other option is to remove the rear bumper and check for signs of bad seams ,missing body grommets etc. Good Luck |
