I have a three year old petrol s max, ?2.4 litre engine.

A whine has started in the engine both idling and driving. It stops, with an audible change in pressure, when I pull the dipstick out. The oil was low when it first started but I've topped it up to halfway.

Anyone got any ideas?

You may have an axle bearing or possible bearing in the differential that is starting to fail.
