I have recently bought a Focus 2.0TDCi 06 plates, 92000 miles and last service at 88000.

Have discovered that whilst accelerating in 4th,5th gear and sometimes 3rd, on reaching 2200rpm i get a strange faint high pitched whistling that sounds like an air leak, with a dip in revs down to 2000rpm with a slight loss in power. It normally gets better and carries on accelerating again but in 5th gear it can happen again at about 2400revs dipping to 2200 and carrying on as normal. I then noticed that it also happens on the motorway in 6th gear and always at 2200-2600 revs. No warning lights come on and also there are no other probs i can see or hear with the car. It does not happen in 1st or 2nd.

Would love to know if anyone has any ideas what the problem could be? I am not very good at DIY cars but would like to know before going to a garage if it may be pricey or easily sorted.

Thanks

check for leaking or split hoses, does it kick any black smoke out on normall drivng, have your turbo checked out preferably by a ford mechanic.

Thanks for the reply! Have had the same advice about split or broken hoses since i posted this thread from another site. I took it to my local ford garage and when they hooked it up to the computer there were no fault codes so they checked all systems and turbo is working perfectly, however when i suggested the hose issue they became reluctant to check saying that it could be anywhere and take ages to find! typical, if the computer doesn't flag it they lose interest! I have not had the time to look myself but will be taking it to another Ford garage in the near future and hope for a better response as i am convinced that as no other symptoms it is a leaking hose somewhere. Hope to have it fixed soon!

Hi mate,

My 2.0 tdci (2005 with 52K) is doing a similar thing. Tends to be when it's getting pushed a bit. Also the power seems to come in in stages as opposed to a smooth curve. Give me a shout when you find the cause of the prob and I'll check mine aswell. I'm even starting to wonder if the clutch or gearbox might be the source i.e slipping a bit under higher torque load.
