The conventional fuel tank filler cap has been discontinued. Now, as introduced on the Ford Mondeo, a spring-loaded tank flap closes off the upper end of the fuel tank filler pipe in place of the filler cap. The spring-loaded tank flap features a locking mechanism. There are two major advantages with this system:

1. Misfueling is not possible.
2. You don't get your hands dirty through having to remove the filler cap.
