Hi there everyone I am new to this forum so please be gentle with me. My nephew has a 51 plate fiesta 1.25 and for the last 8 months the engine management light has been playing up. It started so to speak when it broke down and a garage diagnosed a faulty coil pack and replaced it. The car then ran fine but about 2 weeks later the engine management light came on. His local garage said the cat had probably been contaminated with unburnt fuel when he broke down and so replaced the cat with an after market one. The light stayed off for about 2000 miles and then on a long drive on it came again. After asking around the advice was to replace the top lambda sensor so this was done and light turned off by a mate with a code reader. All fine and then again on a long run on comes the flipping light again. This time the advice is replace the bottom sensor but as this was another 80 quid i just cleaned it up and turned off the light again. You have probably guessed whats coming next. Yes it went for a couple of thousand miles and on came the light again. At this point i am just slightly getting fed up so got a code reader and plugged it in. The code it came back with is P0420 which is something like cat emissions out of parameters. Does anyone have any ideas on my next move, the car drives fine and has just p{Bad Word: Moderated}ed its mot and the emission test was spot on. If it was my car i would remove the bulb.
As a side issue i have been using U480 fault code reader for a while now and it is a terriffic piece of kit for reading codes. Ive used it on fords, renaults and pugs and it works a treat. Only paid 25 quid for it a year ago and it has paid for its self many times over.
Anyway hope someone can help
Thanks pod

why not just take the car to a specialist tuner get it diagnosed properly an error reader is ok as long as you know what to do with the codes that comes out

Because he has already been charged a fortune for work that looks like it did not need doing and the word at the local ford garage is they would change the cat again. All they do is swap parts and hope mean while you pick up the tab for their lack of knowledge.

thats why i said a SPECIALIST tuner not the local ford garage is there anywhere near to you that does krypton tuning remapping has a rolling road etc they are the guys you want to go to i took my sons vw golf to my local guy cos he had a warning light coming on intermittently local guy checks error code has a look clears codes says car needs service so service done two days later light comes on again takes it to car tuning clinic 5 minutes fault found and fixed it was a dodgy coil pack 3 weeks back and forward to local guy 5 minutes for the guys that have got the right gear to find the fault ok costs a few bob but gets the job done right and they said if the same thing happens with any of the other three packs they will do the diag and labour free of charge i only have to pay for coil packs :D

let me know how you get on

Hi there i have just bought a fiesta 1.3 for the wife with the management light on, took it down to my local garage stuck it on the machine, came back with o2 sensor, cat at minumum threshold and fuel level sensor,

anyway, guys changed the HT leads, plugs and the front o2 sensor and the light is off and hasnt returned since..

so its possible that the HT leads are your problem i suppose worth a try certainly less than £100

Martin
